Pushed into motion by the Appendix N Jam (find my entry here) I have engaged in an intensive, rigourous (and two-fisted) period of study, research and legwork looking into the early literary inspirations of D&D and have discovered a veritable corpus of lost works of fantasy fiction. A protracted campaign of beatings, blackmail and bribery has revealed the following titles were excluded, for mysterious reasons, from AD&D's Appendix N:
- The Cruel Curse of Tzan-Tzeng
- Through the Ghost-Field
- Night of the Spine-Beast
- Invaders, Ironclad... Invincible!
- The Ghoul Machine
- The Siege of Stinghollow
- Across Broadsword Lake
- To Duel the Devil's Daughter
- Swords Against Prophecy
- Lo, Death-Lords!
- Against the Marquis of Madness
- Sphere of the Godlings
- Beyond the Impenetrable Darkness
- Amazons, Charge!
- The Twelve Tales of Tlalaklax
- Into the Veridian Pit
- Locked In Silver Shackles
- Empire of the Eternity-Bomb
- Adrift on Typhon's Trireme
- Beware the Wizard's Eye
- Die, Demon, Die!
- A Vision of Burning Spires
- The Beetling Bastion of Emperor Bhzz'tl
- Mozag-Shah's Mountain of Power
- Curses Upon Carloman
- The Gilt Death of Loquacious Grey
- Not for All the Gold in Hell
- Bathed in Troll Blood
- Rise and Ride Again!
- The Amphibane Cycle
- Flight from Castle Cromlech
- Belburbug's Bloody Playthings
- Damocles, Draw Thy Sword!
- The Saga of Sigurd Silver-Eye
- Ixø - City of the Witches
- Beneath Foreign Planets
- The Fiendish Company
- In League with the Lizardmen
- Sir John Sneak - The Rat with Twin Daggers
- The Ringamble Series, particularly Ringamble the Crypt-King, Ringamble the Revolutionary and Ringamble - Upon a Backwards Horse

I'm already coming up with lore for these, so you have succeeded incredibly.
ReplyDeleteComing up with lore? These are all real, readable books. I didn't bloody my fists and leave the shores of Lake Geneva, WI littered with the broken bodies of elderly nerds uncovering these hidden titles for you to suggest they are fake!
DeleteWho are the authors of these books? Who was the publisher of the versions you found ?
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, I must break kayfabe and reveal that I did not uncover these 40 works of pulp fantasy via a "protracted campaign of beatings, blackmail and bribery" as I claim in the post. I am sorry to announce that I made them all up as a creative exercise - though I am pleased the titles were convincing enough to give you pause, you aren't the only one.
